:: Security world’s top issue
Terrorism and lawlessness are hampering human and educational development across the world, said Punjab University (PU) registrar Prof Dr Naeem Khan, urging the United Nations (UN) to take up the world’s security on the top of its agenda.
He was delivering a lecture on UN: Changes and Prospects organised by the PU Co-curricular Committee on Thursday to celebrate the United Nations’ Day on the PU New Campus. The day is annually observed from October 20 to October 26.
The registrar, on behalf of vice chancellor Prof Dr Arif Butt, announced the proclamation of the United Nations Day.
Dr Naeem urged students across the world to ensure peace in the academic institutions.
He said senior students should show tolerance towards the new comers. “Different forces are dividing humanity on the basis of religion, ethnicity, economic opportunities and geography. Every person should have equal opportunities to progress,” he added.
He also called on the UN to safeguard poor nations in the wake of the challenges arising out of the World Trade Order.
The registrar said the PU had formed a committee to organise the UN simulation conference on regular basis.
Faculty of Behavioural Sciences dean and Institute of Communications Studies director Prof Dr Mugheesuddin Sheikh said children’s rights were violated across the world and they had no platform to voice their rights.
He said more than 300,000 child prostitutes were working in the USA. Human rights bad been violated in Bosnia, Palestine and Kashmir, he added.
Social and Cultural Studies Institute director Prof Dr Muhammad Hafeez said the United Nations Day, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1948, was meant to create awareness among people about UN’s aims. A large number of faculty members and students attended the UN Day celebrations.
